Eudora Scripts etc.

All these scripts are designed to be run from the Eudora Toolbar with the click of a button or the typing of an F key.  To activate a script, place it in Eudora's Scripts folder and relaunch Eudora.  To attach a script to a toolbar button, command-click between two buttons and select the script in the menu when Eudora asks.

Click on the script name to download a binhexed version.

Versions earlier than Eudora 5 that do not have a built-in Scripts menu require this plug-in and a folder named "Scripts" in the folder "Eudora Stuff".  This download contains all you need including instructions for installation.⇧

Takes the text selected in a Eudora window and runs it as an Applescript Script.  ⇧

This script allows you to take a snapshot of anything on your screen for pasting as an image into a Eudora message.  When you run the script you will get a dialog in which to choose the application to activate before capture.  You will then get a special cursor to drag over the area of the screen you wish to capture to the clipboard.  The result is a .png image that you can paste into a message.⇧

Allows you quickly to configure the toolbar.⇧

Closes all Eudora windows except the front window.⇧

To use this script you must have the TEC Osax installed.  Click on this link to go to the author's site and download the osax.  The script will convert the content of your outgoing Japanese (+US English) message to 7-bit JIS-encoded text (iso-2022-jp) and the message will be sent with this encoding declared in the header.  The original message must contain only Japanese and US-ASCII text, so be careful not to include any special characters (eg. “curly quotes”, âcçentèd characters etc.) apart from the Japanese in your message or either you will get an error or these characters will be converted to Japanese characters you did not intend.  ⇧

If you receive a message in Russian or Chinese or both, you cannot reply to it normally with Eudora.  You must send your reply utf-8 encoded.  This script converts the clipboard to UTF-8 encoded text and pastes it into the selection.  You must copy the selection just as it is before running this script and you must convert all non-us-ascii text in the message to utf-8 and remove all styling.  The script also creates a special personality for sending utf-8 and requires a special table to function.  The personality and transliteration table of the message are set automatically when you convert the selected text.  This table is included and must be placed in your Eudora Folder before you quit and relaunch Eudora.

Displays Hebrew messages in Safari.⇧

This script will allow you to change the setting that makes the ‘From’ field editable in outgoing messages.  If an outgoing message is frontmost, then you will be given the choice of changing the ‘From’ field in just this message or of changing the setting globally.⇧

This script will empty Eudora’s trash !⇧

This script will delete all messages in the Junk mailbox and empty the trash. The script will run without confirmation provided the Junk summary is frontmost; if not, you will be asked to confirm that you wish to erase the contents of the mailbox.⇧

Outlook Express provides a means of importing mail from other applications but none for exporting. There are various ways of scripting the export of mail but the script below is easy to use and quite fast.

 The script exports the source of the messages to a file that is equivalent to a sendmail dropfile. This can be read “in the raw” in any mail client that uses UNIX mailboxes, eg, Eudora for Windows or Macintosh, Netscape ditto, Pine, Elm, Forte Agent etc. etc.

The script should be saved as a compiled script in the “Script Menu Items” folder in “<startup disk>:Documents:Microsoft User Data:”.  When you select “Export displayed mailbox” from the menu, you are first given the choice of saving the file for UNIX, Windows or Macintosh; this is because the three operating systems require different line terminations.  You are then told how many messages there are and asked to confirm the export, with the option of opening the file as a Eudora mailbox if you have selected MAC in the dialog. There is no danger of running out of memory unless a message is linked to a large attachment; remember that attachments form part of the source of the message and will be included in the dropfile.

When the export is completed you will have the pathname of the file on the clipboard.

This will enable you easily to create a personality in Eudora to download the mail from the file and process the messages properly. When Eudora comes to the front and displays the new mailbox, go to Settings --> Personalities and click the new button. In the Username box paste the pathname that you have on the clipboard; leave the Mail Host box blank. Finally “Check Mail Specially” and select the new personality.  The messages in the file will be dowloaded to your “In” mailbox in the normal way in perfect condition. You can now delete the new mailbox that the script created.

Since the drop file IS the mailbox, you have the choice to leave some messages in the raw.  Normal US-ASCII messages need very little processing, so you can move these to your “In” mailbox directly, before you do the download.  Leave in the mailbox those messages that contain Quoted-Printable, base64, HTML etc; then, before you do the download, compact the mailbox.

This script will first set <x-eudora-setting:128> to "y" to let Eudora generate filter reports and when it is clicked it will bring the filter report window to the front if it exists.  This is useful if the report window has been hidden by other windows and you need to remind yourself where messages have been filtered to.⇧

This is an elaborate script (in active development) that allows you to use Perl regular expressions to modify the message body or selected text in a message or a text window.  The script has two modes — ready-made (human language) and expert.  Only a fixed selection of ready-made routines is currently available but future versions will allow the user either to add to the ready-made pattern file or download a pattern file to be used by the script.  Those who know Perl regular expressions can use the script to perform any operation on the message body or the selection. ⇧

The toolbar window can be modal or floating.  This script will present a dialog allowing you to toggle the setting.⇧

This script allows you quickly to change the default font size in Eudora.⇧

The download will expand to create “Mail Import Folder”.  Read the included Readme file carefully.  This script creates a dropfile containing all the messages from your Mail.app mailboxes and sends you a message telling you how to proceed.  A special personality is created to connect to the dropfile just as you connect to any POP3 server.  A header line is added to each message to enable you to filter all the messages into a special mailbox for sorting.  If you don't set up a filter and put it at the top of your filter list, all the messages will be filtered in the normal way, which may not be what you want, so decide on this before you download the mail. ⇧

This script indents the selected paragraphs in a plain text Eudora message by the number of spaces that you choose. ⇧

For inserting control characters and special characters into Eudora text.⇧

This applet will make copies of all .mbx files found in its path converted to mailbox files for the Mac.  Put the applet at the top level of the folder where it is to look for .mbx files and run it.  It will search this folder and all sub-folders, creating files having the same name as the originals but stripped of the suffix.   You can then transfer the new files to Eudora Folder/Mail Folder/[subfolder/...].  Relaunch Eudora to have the new mailboxes show in the menu etc.  Your original .mbx files are left intact. . ⇧

This script removes all styling from the display of the front message without making any permanent change to the message. ⇧

This script and the accompanying Perl script must be kept in /Eudora Folder/Eudora Items/Scripts. As usual, Eudora must be relaunched after you have installed the items. This is a replacement for Eudora’s built-in “Open in browser” item and will open a styled message in the browser that you have chosen as your default. ⇧

To be used by those who use “Run Perl Script”.  Quickly check the syntax.  If there are no errors, a dialog appears for two seconds to report this; otherwise a dialog appears detailing the errors and showing the offending lines.⇧

A handy button for doing the odd calculation without leaving Eudora. Type the formula in the box, click “OK” and view or copy the result.⇧

Removes “>” quoting marks at the beginning of lines in a message.  This script will remove both marks that are visible as such and those that are displayed as the side-bar in flowed messages.

Presents a dialog that allows you to choose which address(es) to reply to.  Useful for those annoying mailing lists that don't do things properly.⇧

RandomSignature is an application* that you can control and configure from Eudora's toolbar.  This bundle consists of the application "RandomSignature" and a toolbar script "RandomSignature Commands".⇧

This script allows you to write Perl code and run it from a message window or a text window.  If you try it you will probably be amazed !  An editable output window shows the results of your scripts.  If you download this script, download "Perl check syntax" too, though of course this script will also tell you where you went wrong. ⇧

This script allows you to search Eudora's published settings in a flash for those whose description matches a word, a string or a perl-style regular expression typed into a dialog box.  The hits are displayed in a message where you can click on the <x-eudora-setting> links to the settings you have found. ⇧

Sends a message immediately, even if you have the Queue preference set for your button.  Will also resend certain messages from the Out mailbox.⇧

This is an applet that allows you to switch between filter files.  The applet (small application) can be dragged to a toolbar button in Eudora and run from there.  To use multiple filter files, first create folders in your “Eudora Folder” named “Filters something” and duplicate the file “Eudora Filters” into these folders.  Further help is provided from within the applet.⇧

This script requires the table “UTF-8 table [8808]” which you can download here.  Put the plug-in in your Eudora folder and relaunch Eudora.  The script allows you to use Eudora to send multilingual messages in any combination of languages or scripts.

To reply to a message, create the reply in the normal way, then copy the whole body of the message and paste it into TextEdit.  Write your message/reply in TextEdit using any combination of scripts you wish.  When you have finished, run this script to transfer the text of the message into the Eudora message window.  The result will be plain UTF-8 text and the message will have been set to declare UTF-8 as the character set in the headers.  

It is not recommended to do any editing in the Eudora window but you may add quote bars from the formatting toolbar or add US-ASCII text.  On no account must you write any text other than US-ASCII unless you are quite sure you know what you're doing.

If you receive an html message with UTF-8 encoding and Eudora cannot display all the characters, then you can choose Open in Browser from the File menu.  But this is not possible if the message is in plain text.  This script will open the message in TextEdit, allowing you to read the whole text properly displayed. ⇧
